Olympique Marseille must not fear Liverpool, says Valbuena (are you sure?...hahaha)

By Jean-Francois Rosnoblet
MARSEILLE, France, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Olympique Marseille must have no fear when they host Liverpool in their Champions League Group D opener on Tuesday despite painful memories of the English club's last visit, said midfielder Mathieu Valbuena.
"We're full of confidence and must not show any inferiority complex," said Valbuena, who remembers Liverpool stormed through to the last 16 of European soccer's showcase event with a spectacular 4-0 win at the Velodrome stadium last December.
"We have no reason to be fearful," Valbuena, who returned to action this weekend after nursing a groin strain, told reporters.
"Liverpool are the favourites in the group and it's a good thing to start against them," added the playmaker, who scored a superb goal to make Marseille the first French club to beat Liverpool at Anfield in October last year.
Marseille should be at full strength with Valbuena and France winger Hatem Ben Arfa, who has recovered from a knee injury, both expected to start after coming on as substitutes in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Girondins Bordeaux on Saturday.
That result left the 1993 European champions undefeated after five Ligue 1 matches and second in the standings, two points behind champions Olympique Lyon.
Liverpool, second in the Premier League, boosted their morale by beating arch-rivals Manchester United 2-1 on Saturday to give manager Rafael Benitez his first league victory over United in his fifth season in charge at Anfield.
BEST PERFORMANCE
"Now we will go to Marseille in a good frame of mind," Benitez told reporters after Saturday's win. "That was our best performance of the season and we now feel we can go into the Champions League in good heart and spirit."
Benitez, however, was unsure whether key players Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres would be fully fit for the Marseille game.
Gerrard played 22 minutes on his return from a groin operation but Spain striker Torres remained on the bench after suffering a hamstring injury against Aston Villa on Aug. 31.
Javier Mascherano is also a doubt after pulling up in Saturday's game with a calf problem.
Probable teams:
Olympique Marseille - Steve Mandanda; Laurent Bonnart, Ronald Zubar, Hilton, Taye Taiwo; Hatem Ben Arfa, Modeste Mbami, Mathieu Valbuena, Benoit Cheyrou; Bakary Kone, Mamadou Niang.
Liverpool - Pepe Reina; Alvaro Arbeloa, Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel, Fabio Aurelio; Yossi Benayoun, Steven Gerrard, Javier Mascherano, Ryan Babbel; Dirk Kuyt, Robbie Keane.
We won it without using our 2 SUPER FIGHTERS and Man.U is KAPUT...

- Rafa must have said something to them rather `intimately' during the break and it was shown during the 2nd half with everyone running for the ball full-hearted AND tackle the opponent with full convictions. That excite the crowd and we, tv viewers trusted the manner they play.
- The greatness of Monster Masherano is the key. He was seen to be shaking his head when his fellow countrymen managed to score as early as the 3rd mins. He must have been cursing himself for that goal. And when he set his target, damned this short and small but very strong midfielder just rammed on his opponent, thus `complimented' by Fergie who claimed that his boys was hassled by LFC's physical approaches (that's funny... Fergie knows football is a contact game and coming from a very experience manager - such statement is insulting to humans intelligent.
- The defensive midfielder typified the tenacity that turned the game in his side's favour and left Sir Alex Ferguson angry that United had been outfought.
- Masherano was the play maker in setting up the winning goal. In fact, without him I sincerely think that LFC won't be able to stop Scholes or Giggs. But he did. Tremendously!
- Man.U lost Carrick. I guess that's also contribute to the collapse of Man.U's defence. But is it LFC's fault that he got injured? No way. It's part and parcel of the game. You break your leg, you'll lose. That's all.
- No matter what people are talking about Robbie Keane... and yes, he is yet to score any goals after 4 league games and a couple UCL, but the manner that Wes Brown and Ferdinand shadowed him, proves how much the Man.U's defenders rated him. Both of them knows Keane is a lethal striker. They managed to close his movement, stop him from scoring but they failed to do the same to Babel.
- Rafa was seen changing his mind at the very last minute. David Ngog was ready to go in for Keane but Rafa saw that Masherano has waved for a change. On live telecast, Rafa acted as if he was a madman.. shouting NO... NO!... with his dramatic hands signals and everybody (in particular the referees...) was shocked (for a moment). Ngog's arrival was canceled and came in Hyppia for Masherano. The time is 5 minutes into full time. However, the whole thing shows what a brilliant man Rafa is. I'm not bias. I guess you got to use your brain to defeat such a talented team like Man.U and Rafa did just that.
NOTICE:
Now all of you LIVERPOOL FC Fans... We must enjoy this win and gloat about it for a month. Do not hesitate to hassle any of Man.U fans and jeer them mercilessly. Create a funny face, smile you must not but LAUGH loudly at them. Make a statement. Tell them that LFC have beaten Man.U over and over again... until he walks away...crying may be.

Lets break the jinx and beat Man.U

- Rafa Benitez is looking to record his first league win over United at the ninth attempt. He did however oversee Liverpool's first F.A.Cup victory over United in 85 years thanks to a Peter Crouch goal on this ground in 2006.
- Liverpool have not scored in any of their last seven league games against United since John O'Shea scored an own goal at Old Trafford in September 2004.
- In fact, no Liverpool player has scored a league goal against United since Danny Murphy from the penalty spot at Old Trafford in April 2004. Harry Kewell in November 2003 was the last to score in open play.
- Liverpool's last league win here against today's opponents came in November 2001 when they won 3-1 with Michael Owen (two) and John Arne Riise scoring.
Other than that, I don't remember any win and I had to pay massive losing monies to the Man.U fans. Rafa has different ways of approaching Fergie's tactics. And all are wrong!
Contrary to Houllier, he managed to win double (home & away) over Man.U. Remember that rocket from Risse that hit the bar so hard, everybody was shocked and laughing at Fabian Bartez!
